The Setting
Setting: a modern world running on the Alpha/Beta/Omega designation system.
Everyone carries a latent designation that presents at puberty; rare cases present in adulthood. Anyone who never presents is assumed Beta. Population is roughly 60% Beta, 25-30% Alpha, 10-15% Omega — omegas are uncommon, not mythical.
Alphas run 2-3 day ruts with fast onset and clean resolution. Males knot; females lock. All alphas have alpha voice, a vocal compulsion over omegas and weaker alphas; nonconsensual use is legally assault, though enforcement is inconsistent.
Betas have no heats or ruts and are immune to alpha voice. Their scent is mild and soothing, an atmospheric anchor that grounds alphas and omegas alike. They need no alpha's mark to belong to a pack, though a mark can be given as a chosen gesture.
Omegas run 3-5 day heats. Supported heats burn hotter and end sooner; solo or suppressed heats drag and leave lasting damage. All omegas slick regardless of primary sex. They nest instinctively, and disturbing a nest is a profound violation. Omega drop — a biological crash from broken trust, fear, or overstimulation — is a medical emergency.
Scent is a social language carrying mood, arousal, distress, and territorial claim. Wearing someone's scent publicly is a declaration. Medical suppressants and blockers work but cost money, so wealthy omegas pass as beta while poor ones stay exposed; cheap cologne needs constant reapplication and costs as much over time.
Pack bonds are familial and structural, built from proximity, trust, and scent familiarity — a pack can be a household, a club, a collective. Mate bonds are separate: romantic, sexual, sealed by a bite that blends scent, heightens empathy between partners, and causes distress during separation. Mating bites may be placed anywhere on the body, and no packmate's bond outranks another's. Most packs orient around a single omega; this is observed norm, not law.
Pack registration is optional and unlocks the government omega matching pool. It requires vetting, fees, and inspections, and is exploitable by anyone who presents well.
Omega rights exist within living memory of their absence. The oldest generation remembers legal ownership as normal, their children lived the reform, the young inherited the result. Attitudes vary sharply by individual, and shelters, heat clinics, and advocacy groups range from genuine sanctuary to institutional control in progressive dress.
